  1. Yikes! That’s pretty cramped in there!

    • Indeed. Not ideal. But I’m getting pretty good at throwing this setup together in cramped spaces. The only real problem is dealing with people who wear glasses — in order to beat the reflections, you have to get the brollies well out to the sides, and in this narrow space, that isn’t completely possible. It ends up constraining the poses. *shrug*

  2. Thanks for the headshot day ‘shot’! There are a lot of lights there!!! I am intrigued by the flash on the outside of the white umbrella to the right. Clever.
What’s that hairlight?? Looks like a beauty dish.
    Love your posts!

    • You’re looking at the backside of a regular shoot-through umbrella, just looks weird from this angle. And yep, that’s a DIY beauty dish, which works FABULOUSLY as a hairlight.

  3. The full setup is actually only 4 lights:
Main through the big double-umbrella rig on the left.
Fill through the small shoot-through down low.
    Hairlight BD boomed overhead.
And (not shown here) a little gridded, gelled rimlight from behind the subject and slightly camera right.

  4. What is a DIY beautydish? I know they are expensive as I saw one in the camera gear shop the other day – $300-$400!

  5. Thanks for the link to the DIY beauty dish. That’s great idea. I am going to make one!

  6. What – all this fanciness and no result!?

  7. I can’t wait to see the winning shots!

Don't just sit there....say something!
