Workshops!

This should make a few people happy. Today I’m announcing three new workshops – one in Canada, one in the US, and one in Europe.

Workshops are great fun – I get to meet a bunch of talented photographers, and hang out with them for a day or two with no client pressure, no deadlines, no hassles….just photography! I think I’ve now taught 30 or 40 of these, in 5 countries, and I’ve gotten to the point where I think it’s a pretty good day. You can search this blog under the term “workshop” for a few good posts that deal with past events.

THE SCHEDULE

Over the coming 10 days, I’ll do a separate post for each of these workshops with all the detailed info I have, but here’s the bullet for them now:

First up will be Phoenix, Arizona. Once again, I’m hosted by Lennar (this will be my third time teaching in a Lennar model in Phoenix) and we’ll be in their newest development, Layton Lakes. This is on the calendar for Saturday, November 12th, and Sunday November 13th. It’s a one-day workshop, so you’d only attend one of those days. You can register for this workshop today, by clicking on this link.

Next, a return to Calgary, Alberta, with my friends at The Camera Store. This one has been cooking for a long time (I was talking with Jim Slobodian about this before I had even left town following my last trip there). Jim and I have worked hard to produce what may be the coolest workshop I’ve ever done. This will be November 18th, 19th and 20th. There will be a one-day “beginners” day (the 18th), geared towards folks who are just getting their feet wet with interiors, but then we’ve planned a two-day “advanced” workshop that will really get into the hard stuff. I’ll be assuming that you’ve got the fundamentals down, and we’ll look at where you can go from there. We’ll be shooting twilights, reviewing student work on the big screen, and spending time on post-processing using Lightroom and Photoshop. I can promise you this: you’ll be very, very tired by the end of day two! Registration is not ready yet, but watch this blog for a special post soon.

Finally, Spain. This one will be good. We’ll be in the ancient village of Ronda (about an hour and twenty minutes from Marbella), shooting a sprawling country estate set against the Andalusian hills. Great opportunities for shooting killer exteriors, and a variety of interiors, from small bedrooms to elegant dining. This is still in the planning stages, but will take place in the last week of November. I’ll have details ASAP, again, watch this blog for a separate post about this. If you’re interested, shoot me an email and I’ll put you on the list.

That’s it for now — again, I’ll be detailing all of these over the next 1o days, so stay tuned!

This Week in Photos: August 19, 2011

A very slow week. I spent most of my time re-organizing gear into a couple of new used equipment cases, and working on pre-production for stuff happening over the next  3 weeks, some of which is pretty cool.

Since it was fairly popular, I’m including before/afters again this week, starting with the before of the lead photo, above. Enjoy!

Headshot Day!

Composition For Interiors

I get asked to review a lot of photographers’ portfolios. Usually they’re asking me for advice on lighting, but I find that I usually have more to say about the compositions than anything else. And generally, it’s the composition of the photo that drives the other factors, especially the lighting.

With that in mind, I asked videographer (and photographer) Malia Campbell to help me record a quick video outlining some of my thoughts on composing for residential interiors. Malia takes you right inside my camera, so you can see exactly what I’m seeing as I compose shots!

Malia did a fantastic job on this – so be sure to click the HD button and see it large. We shot this in one long day, at a house in Oakland California. It’s my first attempt at a true instructional video, let me know what you think!

More on composition, and a photo breakdown, after the jump.

This Week in Photos: August 12, 2011 – Updated!

Here’s a selection, for your Friday viewing pleasure. It’s been a wacky week, and I’m ready to settle down with a chunk of bread, a wedge of cheese, and a glass of white.

Some good stuff in the works – see you next week!

*******UPDATE********

Per popular demand, I’m including a “before” shot, with no lighting, with each photo (when I have them). Take the jump to see ’em!

LMB Interiors Featured on Decorati

Very nice to see my client Laura Martin Bovard featured on Decorati.com — along with images I made of two of her projects (here, and here).

I like working with Laura because she’s intensely focussed, and willing to put in the work to attain a really good photograph, no matter what it takes.¬† (I remember sitting in a cold car with her at 5:00am sipping coffee while we waited for pre-dawn access to a restaurant she designed. Between us, we barely had enough Spanglish to talk our way past the prep cook, who hadn’t been told about the shoot). On-set, she’s intent, but relaxed, clearly having a good time even as she obsesses over details.

She’s assertive enough to speak up when a shot isn’t working for her, but also open to my arguments when I push for an angle she hadn’t considered. Between us, we’ve produced some images that are among my all-time favorites.

Laura’s wrapping up some cool new projects, so I’m looking forward to our next shoot!

This Week In Photos: August 5, 2011

All but one in this group are from a big Oakland contemporary that I spent a lot of time in this week. This place was a lot of fun to shoot….great compositions everywhere. Up to you to figure out which one is from the other house.

Happy Friday — I’m off for a weekend in Carmel! See the rest of the photos after the jump!

Senior Living by Atria

A few weeks ago I spent two long days shooting an assisted living facility operated by Atria Senior Living. They had just completed a major remodel and wanted to create new promotional material.

April Ernst (Marketing Redevelopment Specialist) flew in from Kentucky and we got straight to work. We had already corresponded over a set of scouting photos I made a couple of weeks in advance, and we had a pretty solid plan for the shoot. We wasted no time but got straight to work!
